Beyond Ambition: Achieving Net Zero in NHS Supply Chains - Event Write Up
Kicking off our Sustainability Day of Action, we took a deep dive into the NHS's ambitious journey towards Net Zero. We explored the crucial role of the supply chain in achieving this goal and how collaboration with verification bodies and innovative technology can pave the way to a more sustainable supply chain.
Featured Speakers included:
Stephen Burt, Carbon & Sustainability Services Director, NQA Certification
Brooke McElwee, Richardson Health
Tushar Sharma, Co-Founder and CEO, Ecomedic AI
Our first speaker Stephen Burt from NQA Certification addressed the significance of accredited verification services in accurately quantifying and mitigating carbon emissions within the NHS supply chain. Stephen emphasised how certification ensures transparency and accountability in emission reduction efforts.
Brooke McElwee from Richardson Health shared her experience collaborating with NQA to achieve their sustainability goals “We have reduced carbon emissions by 5% through green travel policy and optimizing warehouse locations.”
The session discussed the adoption of international standards like ISO 14064-1 and PAS 2060 within the NHS supply chain. These standards establish a framework for robust carbon footprint measurement and reporting.
We were then joined by Tushar Sharma, CEO of Ecomedic AI, a groundbreaking AI-powered LCA tool. This tool reduces the time and cost associated with traditional LCAs, enabling hospitals and suppliers to conduct these crucial assessments at scale.
“Did you know that the healthcare systems account for over 5% of global CO2 emissions? That is more than the aviation sector…”
Traditional LCAs can take months and be prohibitively expensive, hindering widespread adoption. Ecomedic's solution empowers healthcare organizations to identify and implement more carbon-efficient practices across their clinical pathways.
The presentation highlighted the vital role of collaboration and innovation in achieving the NHS's Net Zero ambitions. Accredited verification services and AI-powered tools like Ecomedic's LCA platform can significantly enhance transparency, accuracy, and efficiency in emission reduction efforts
